Art by Renior

I was born in Limoges, Haute-Vienne, France, on February 25, 1941 as a child of a working class family. My first encounter with painting dates from my childhood, I worked in a porcelain factory where my drawing talent led to my painting designs on china.

From the beginning in early 1960s when I started studying art under Charles Gleyre in Paris, when I didn’t have enough money to buy paint, to my last day when rheumatoid arthritis severely hampered my movement and I was forced to paint by strapping a brush to my arm, and created sculptures by directing an assistant who worked the clay, My painting is always beautiful and optimistic! "The pain passes, but the beauty remains".

A Girl with a Watering Can
The deep blue of the dress, the bright red of the bow and the girl's lips, and the cool greens of the lush garden behind her are all given a prismatic brilliance by the brushwork. Rather than blend my colors, I have applied them in individual touches that dissolve edges and seem to shimmer with light. Impressionism sought to capture the effect of light on the senses, communicating a visual signal with each stroke of the brush.

The Umbrellas
This picture, as well as being a delight in itself, illustrates a transitional aspect of my art. It shows a new attention to design as a well-defined scheme of arrangement, the umbrellas forming a linear pattern of a far from Impressionist kind, the linear element also being stressed in the young modiste's bandbox, the little girl's hoop and the umbrella handles. In this care for definite form, apparent also in the figures at the left, one can see a discontent with Impressionism and a search for a firmer basis of style.

Luncheon of the Boating Party
The painting depicts a group of my friends relaxing on a balcony at the Maison Fournaise along the Seine river in Chatou, France. Art patron, Gustave Caillebotte, and I are seated in the lower right. My future wife, Aline Charigot, is in the foreground playing with a small dog. In this painting I have captured a great deal of light. As you can see the main focus of light is coming from the large opening in the balcony, beside the large singleted man in the hat. The singlets of both men in the foreground and the table-cloth both work together to reflect this light and send it through the whole composition.
